Cover Story

Studio Kahaani showroom on the cover of the Ottawa at Home Magazine

This fall brought with it a major milestone for me, with the Studio Kahaani showroom landing on the cover of the Ottawa at Home Magazine’s home and design issue.

Needless to say, holding a copy in my hands for the first time will remain high up there on the list of milestones on this creative path. The article is online, but there is nothing like good old fashioned print, and it was truly thrilling to see that cover shot in high gloss.

I didn’t change or stage anything in the frame, beyond straightening things up, and that’s what feels quite special about the image. It’s a true picture of the view I’ve created this year through that arched steel door, a view for others as well as myself. A lesson on the creative potential of a space, transformed entirely from its original incarnation as a library to a showroom and creative lab. And most importantly for me, a perspective on design today that can incorporate glimpses of culture and heritage and stories that must be in the frame.

The accompanying article is a lovely description of my journey, which I’m proud to share with others. But I’m also so proud to see a kalamkari block printed rug - which has taken a journey that carries with it craft heritage, village looms, artisans in their workshops, vegetable dyes from Indian flora - on the cover of a magazine here in Canada. For me, that journey carries even more stories with it. Stories that I didn’t see on magazine covers growing up, and that I hope we see more of in the future.

Thank you to the Ottawa at Home Magazine for this piece, and to you for sharing in the journey thus far. I hope you enjoy the article, and am looking forward to continued conversation about culture, storytelling, home, and design. Beautifully unstaged, always in the frame.
