For the Love of Modern

We’re spending more time in our backyard with the warmer weather, so I thought I would share some other views of the house that show you the modern rear addition to our Victorian home. Incorporating modern design and architecture in our renovation was a priority for me. While it was important to preserve the historic facade and the streetscape I’ve known since childhood, a necessary renovation gave us the opportunity to create a contrast between the historic and the modern. Celebrating rather than shying away from contrast keeps things interesting and avoids the feeling of a theme - whether in design, style, or life.

I tend to use that as a guiding principle when designing spaces or styling clothes. A floral dress is a floral dress, comfortable and simple and not that surprising in the warmer months. With the sharp edges of architectural shoes in stark white and a modern take on pearl earrings, it quickly shifts from quaint to creative and lends my own unique interpretation. Also, these shoes might not look it but they are incredibly comfortable and work for my post-babies and pandemic feet when I value practicality as much as style.

Much the same as the modern addition to our historic structure, which allows us to enjoy a home that is uniquely ours, stylized, yet immensely practical for our family. And it’s all a celebration of the contrasts that I love - the art, the design, and the life we live in it.
