Indian Cottons to Beat the Heat

Warm weather means I’m in Indian cottons as much as possible. Block prints, airy cuts, and vegetable dyes that somehow keep their scent forever - triggering fragrant flashbacks of grandmothers’ metal wardrobes and shopping in bazaars for nighties. Truth be told, I would probably live in Indian cotton nighties all summer if I could. Actually, if I call them kaftans and say I bought them somewhere like Nordstrom, I think I’m allowed?

This dress is an easy option for me when I want a bit of colour, shape, and an elegant longer length that is easy to carry. The green makes me feel like a proper horticulturalist, as I survey my garden below. But as far as my daughter is concerned, she decided is still looks like a nightie. “A nice one, mama, but it looks like a nightie.” Hello children, goodbye ego. But maybe she’s onto something, and I just embrace the daytime nighties, as our grandmothers did, and wrap myself in memories of their fragrant metal wardrobes in the summer heat.
