Bedroom Eyes

A room with a view…when the room is the view.

I love when a bedroom is its own mood, a slight shift in energy from the rest of the house. This is the view when entering the principal bedroom in our modern Victorian, and it always feels like entering a space that floats slightly above the rhythm of our busy lives.

Neutrals in a bedroom are a good choice to create a calm environment for retreat and sleep, but neutrals can sometimes feel impersonal. To continue the through-line of the modern, organic approach in the rest of the home I incorporated texture and rough-hewn elements such as the pure linen drapery and a practical Indian charpoy or daybed with its traditional jute construction. A vintage rug grounds the space and adds visual interest while allowing the space to remain airy. Finally, I like to include art in principal bedrooms that is quietly special and has a transportive quality both in daylight as well as evening light.

And at the end of the day when the kids find their way in with their usual assortment of stuffed toys and books, this room truly has my favourite view in the house.
